Spring Break Trip: Climbing at the New River Gorge
Description: YMC went to New River Gorge last year and had an amazing time sport climbing and top-roping. Now we're going back to West Virginia for more adventure. With over 1,600 routes, the New is one of the premier locations in eastern North America.

The trip is 8 days but the length is flexible and folks can meet us there or leave early if need be. Costs below reflect the full 8 day trip. Shorter stays will be pro-rated. Note that the cost is approximate and will depend on the number of people going.

We will be camping outside at a local campsite with shower house. Be aware it will be chilly in the evenings.

We will be both top-roping and sport climbing on this trip. It not necessary, but preferable, that participants be familiar with the basics of sport climbing. If there is interest, the CT Rock Gym will offer a three-hour sport climbing class in the next two weeks for YMC members who want to learn to lead. Please contact maria.birukova@yale.edu immediately if interested.

Trip Reports:
Report Date: 4/11/2010 7:38:29 PM
Weather Conditions: Mostly 50s and 60s during the day. Colder at night. The first couple mornings were damp but things dried out.
Leaders: Maria Birukova
Group Size: 5 (6 for a few days)
Transportation: Drove from New Jersey in a small SUV packed completely full of gear.
Expenses: Gas (~$40 a person), food (~12 a person), camping ($10 a person), and individual food from Miguel's.
Route Description/ Trail Information: We went to Red River Gorge, KY (not New River Gorge as the trip describes). We climbed at Muir Valley, Chocolate Factory Wall, Military Wall/Left Flank, and Roadside Crag. All were good climbing areas but Military Wall/Left Flank was excessively crowded.
Maps/Guidebooks: "Red River Gorge Rock Climbs: 2nd Edition" by Ray Ellington and the online guidebook at http://www.redriverclimbing.com/RRCGuide/.
Highlights: Hiking out in the pitch black every night but one (and with only half the necessary headlamps). Taking full advantage of Miguel's and its pizza and rice bowls. Saint Patrick's Day celebration. Queen City Creamery on the drive back. No injuries!
Difficulties Encountered: We had trouble getting started in the morning and arguably stayed out too late. It was also quite a task trying to fit all of the gear, people, and food inside the small SUV.
Other Comments: At the last minute, we decided to go to the Red River Gorge in Kentucky (instead of the New River Gorge in West Virginia). This decision was made based on the greater number of sport climbs below 5.10 and the fact that the overhung nature of the Red would allow more climbing in the event of damp weather.
