Camel's Hump Snowshoe Trip
Description: We leave Phelps Gate on Saturday February 13 at 7 a.m., hit the trail up Camel's Hump by noon, and make camp by 5 or 6. Depending on snow cover and interest we may make snow shelters and quinzhees to spend the night, although tents will always be an option. The next morning we'll make an alpine start and should be back to campus by early Sunday afternoon.

Trip Reports:
Report Date: 2/17/2010 2:35:39 AM
Weather Conditions: Overcast with light breeze, then snowy
Leaders: Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins, Stephan Sanders
Group Size: 9
Transportation: Three cars (~4 hours each way)
Expenses: Gas, renting gear, YO membership
Route Description/ Trail Information: We took the Monroe Trail to the Hump Brook campsite, then ascended Camel's Hump by the Long Trail and descended by the Monroe Trail back to Hump Brook. The next day we packed out by the Monroe Trail.
Maps/Guidebooks: Green Mountain Club sent me (Jonathan) a .pdf of the area. Stephan had a USGS topo.
Highlights: -A delicious pesto, cheddar, and Parmesan pasta dinner
-Stephan's raconteuring
-Megan's homemade cookies
-People getting 10+ hours of sleep and being super toasty in our bomber Trango tents and super warm sleeping bags
-The ascent of Camel's Hump
-A lot of people's first night winter camping
Difficulties Encountered: -The ascent of Camel's Hump was made after dark with headlights. Stephan capably and safely led the group in the darkness, though
-Folks were pretty chilled after getting back to camp after the hike (temperature was getting into the low teens probably)
Other Comments: I (Jonathan) stayed back and made camp while everyone else ascended the peak (led by Stephan). So only eight of our party of nine actually made it to the top.
