VT Circus: Ice Climbing, Crevasse Rescue, Snowshoeing
Description: Saturday morning (6:30) we will get an ‘alpine start’ and head up to Bolton Quarry (BQ). The drive to BQ is about 3.5 hours. Once there we will set up a few top rope anchors for ice climbing and establish some practice areas for crevasse rescue, anchor building, and other fun stuff. And don’t worry, the approach to BQ is short and easy so you will not have to slog yourself through the snow for multiple hours.

Skills we will be practicing include ice climbing, anchor building (snow and ice), and crevasse rescue.

After our day of fun at BQ we will get some dinner, then head to Smugglers Notch (20 min drive) where we will set up camp for the night.

Sunday we will break camp early to snowshoe up Mount Mansfield, the highest summit in Vermont, a strenuous 4 mile round trip that is still appropriate for beginners. We will try to return to New Haven by dinner time.

The route up Mount Mansfield is also appropriate for intermediate skiers with their own light touring or alpine touring gear. Rental for this equipment is $50-60 in Vermont, so we are not offering this as a ski trip, but feel free to bring your own if you’d like.

Depending on car availability, you can come for the ice climbing, the snowshoeing, AND/OR the overnight camping. Let us know your preference.
